About
A proud Arizonan for 40 years, and a resident of Sierra Vista, Pat Fleming was born near her grandparents’ Missouri farm. Growing up as the daughter of a career Army Officer and an Army Civilian mother, Pat learned the importance of service to the nation and the strength that comes from its shared values, diversity and rich history. Her commitment to serve others comes from the selfless example set by her parents.
In 1969, Pat and her family moved to Sierra Vista where she began to make personal and professional ties in the community. In 1981, she followed her parents’ footsteps and began working as an Army Department civilian at Fort Huachuca. She graduated from the University of Phoenix in 1984 with a degree in Business Management. She proved her ability to manage complex government resources during her career with the Army as a budget analyst and a manpower allocations analyst. In August 2005, Pat retired with more than 24 years of service to the Army.
Pat met the challenges of being a military wife, a mother, and later a single parent during the 1970s and 1980s. At times she worked three part-time jobs to provide for her two sons. Pat’s involvement in community activities began in 1980, when her sons participated in Cub Scouts and sports. Her volunteerism with organizations such as the Cochise County Search & Rescue Team, the Cochise County Victim Witness Program, Arizona Parents for Public Education (APPLE), the Southwest Association of Buffalo Soldiers, AARP, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees have made her a leader in many spheres. Pat has also worked with the Cochise County Planning and Zoning Department as a member of the Board of Adjustment.
Pat’s decades of experience as a budget and manpower analyst have prepared her well to ensure that the state has a balanced budget while protecting families and education. She is focused on getting real results from government programs. She is a fiscal conservative who will fund education and vital community programs without frivolous spending. Pat is passionate about protecting Arizona’s families, children and seniors. She believes every child and college student deserves a world-class education. She wants all seniors to have access to affordable prescription drugs. Pat has been, and will continue to be, an advocate for our active duty military, our military installations, and our veterans.
Pat was a leader when she served in our state capitol, and was one of only 8 Democratic lawmakers to pass a bill in the 49th session, a bipartisan-supported bill that allowed Arizona Veterans to qualify for in-state tuition to attend any Arizona college or university. This is the kind of common-sense legislation Pat focuses on, and it is now law.
Pat is committed to preserving the ranches, farms, and rural communities that underpin such a big part of our cultural heritage. She also works to attract new businesses that bring good jobs to our communities.
Pat believes that economic growth must go hand in hand with carefully considered land use in our communities. Pat recognizes the problem of global warming. She understands the necessity for Arizonans to preserve the environment and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels by using solar energy and other alternative sources of power. She wants to create thousands of green jobs by making southern Arizona a national leader in solar energy.
Pat is married to Robert “Bob” Fleming, and their family together includes 5 children and 12 grandchildren, one of whom is currently serving in the United States Army in Afghanistan.
